How to pitch using a documentary

A few years ago I was approached with a challenge; We need to pitch our project with a 5 minute long video. Can we make a documentary that shows how well it actually works?

The pitch

Getting kids to sing is not easy. How can we make it fun? Let them choose what they sing, of course! We would go to the pilot school, visit classes, ask kids to sign up and in 3 days form a choir that would perform in front of the entire school.

I would film the entire project, and we would then edit together a short documentary that would serve as part of the project pitch, in order to get funding for more similar projects.

limitations for the documentary

Filming children at school comes with some limitations. We had to make sure everyone who is identifiable in the video has signed permission from their guardians. This meant that during the first day we could not film anyones face, only once they had the permission slip signed the following day.

Another limitation was that the whole film had to be a maximum of 5 minutes long. There was a lot we wanted to show, but not a whole lot of time to do so.

There was also the unpredictability of the children and the project in general, which meant that we needed to adapt quickly as situations unfolded.

The result

The project was a success, as you can see from the video. The effect it had on the pitch was great, as it really does show how this concept works, and that it really does work.

If you would like to make a documentary for your pilot project or pitch, send us a message and we may be able to help! We also offer conditional pricing, where the price depends on funding aquired using the video.
